Articles - New DataMax 6 Horizontal Cable Provides Cost Saving and Category 6 Performance

Quabbin Wire & Cable introduces a new cost saving horizontal cable that complies with TIA/EIA 568-B.2-1 standard for Category 6. The cable is less expensive, has smaller diameter, is more flexible, easy to install, and does not use a spline or other pair separator.

New DataMax® 6 Horizontal Cable Provides Cost Saving and Category 6 Performance

June 4, 2002     --- Quabbin Wire announces the introduction of a UTP, CMR rated, solid conductor Category 6 compliant cable. The 4-pair cable is designed to reduce the installed cost of horizontal cable runs through improved ease of installation, lower unit cost, and reduced tray/pathway fill. The cable is also intended for use in non-flexing equipment cords in the highest performance networks.

The cable achieves Category 6 performance without the use of over-sized copper, a spline, special pair separators, bonded pairs, or other unusual features. This results in a design that is cost effective, more flexible, and smaller in diameter than most other Category 6 horizontal cables.

Category 6 performance in a small, cost effective design

The cable has an overall diameter of only 0.225 inches. The cable's smaller diameter results in premise system savings due to reduced tray, conduit, and duct fill. Tray and pathway fill calculations indicate 25% more cables may typically be installed per run. The added flexibility contributes to an easier installation and additional cost savings. The cable is also available in convenient labor saving reel-in-a-box packaging.

The design utilizes 24 AWG solid bare copper conductors insulated with polyolefin, and a fire resistant PVC jacket. The design has excellent Return Loss, Attenuation, Crosstalk, and other performance characteristics as required by the TIA/EIA's Category 6 specification for horizontal cabling. The cable has an NEC and CEC type CMR listing.

This solid conductor cable is also suitable for use in non-flexing cords, which are often used in equipment rooms to interconnect hubs, routers, or other active gear. In this static environment, the cable's flexibility, reduced diameter and simplified construction allow it to be easily terminated to modular connectors and punched down to termination devices. The result is lower attenuation in these equipment cords and improved channel ACR or bandwidth. NOTE: Stranded cable should always be used for cord applications subjected to flexure.
